Commanders Message

My message this month is about whom we are and what we represent. We are American Legion members, along with the Auxiliary, Sons, and soon to be established Legion Riders. We support out service members both past and present, and first responders. We support the various programs to instill in our youth the importance of Americanism and patriotism. We are on the front lines of a cultural and political war that threatens our American way of life. What can we do?

Lets our voice be heard! Support our post in any way possible. Help us find new members. Help us fight this onslaught of Anti Americanism, opioid addiction, lack of respect for our way of life and the intrusion of Anti American Groups in our society. Speak up; call your local representatives, vote, donate your time and resources if possible. Reach out to the weak and vulnerable, stand up for our way of life.

We need you to become involved, we need to put past differences aside and treat each other with respect. We need to look what we can do to, and not look at what we can get. I was recently told, "If you’re not dead, you’re not done". We have much to do, we need you, come join us and return our Post and our American Legion to the proud and influential organization it was established to become.

God bless you all and God Bless America.

Jimmy Josko

Commander Post 271

I would like to thank everyone who have already paid their dues for the 2018 year; especially those who made an effort to send in the additional $10.00 after learning of the increase. For every membership paid, the Post must send to the Department of Florida $29.00 which is then split between National and the Department. Before the increase your Post was only making $16.00 for each membership and this is why the increase was needed.

Please be aware all officers are volunteers; we do not get paid for any office we hold and we do try to devote as much time as possible to our duties. With that being said, please be patient when sending in your dues for your new membership card, it will be processed promptly. In the meantime, your 2017 card is good until the end of the year so there is no need to panic. We are currently at approximately 30 percent of our goal for member renewals. Please help us reach our goal of a 100 percent renewal by the end of this year.

Every Careless Word

Jesus said that for every careless word there will be a time of accounting at the Day of Judgment. Careless words are things we say without concern for their impact on others.

Often when we have nothing to good say we are tempted to speak idle and careless words.

Think carefully about the words that come from your mouth. You should speak only words that uplift and encourage others.

Hello to all of our members of this fine post. I’m so proud to announce that the Sons of the American Legion post 271 have decided to purchase a brand new 75 inch smart TV to be installed in place of the calendar is on the east wall of the canteen. We will have a continuously changing program that will have the calendar and special events broadcast on it thought out the day and when we have special events (Games and such) will also be broadcast on it.

Another item the Son’s has decided to fund the replacement of the front marquee sign. The sign will have "The American Legion Post 271" on top and 4 lines of interchangeable letters below. We all feel that this change can help all passing cars to know what is going on at our post. This can only help all of us succeed in our efforts to raise more money for all of our veterans.

With that said, I would like to thank all of you for your continuous support when have an event going on. We look forward to working with all of you in the future.

Remember guys that membership is now due, $45.00. Let's get it in ASAP so that we can fund other programs here at the post and also at the state and nationals levels. Honor Guard

We continue to drill to improve our ability to formally honor our departed comrades with rifle salutes and color guards.  We also are learning all the other ceremonial activities that accompany the larger events.

We can use a few more good men and women to ensure we have enough members to properly represent the Post 271 family at these final tributes.

We also have some fun learning to avoid falling victim to the dreaded M-1 Thumb.

Drill continues on the second and fourth Monday's at 1900.  These are paid drills (one of your regular favorite libations in return for your attention and service).

Uniforms provided by the post.

Remember our fallen members on the final Sunday during Brunch. We will announce the names and play Taps in their honor.

Canteen News

We are finally or should I say hopefully done with summer. I’m looking forward to welcoming all our friends back from up north. At this time the kitchen has been reopened and ready to serve all your favorite dishes at lunch and dinner time.

Many thanks to everyone's support and understanding through the reorganization of the kitchen and bartender scheduling. It is never easy when you have to change things up but all of our intentions and efforts are to make the Legion "great again".

This month we are starting another JACKPOT RAFFLE game that will be drawn on Monday nights. Tickets are 2 for $1.00 and we will have drawings at 6pm and 7pm. Tickets will be sold up to 5:55pm and then 6:55 pm. After the first drawing at 6pm all the tickets that have been collected all week will remain in the jug. Whomever would like to purchase more tickets can do so and they will be added to the jug for the 7pm drawing. If the 7pm ticket is the same number as the 6pm drawing the person who’s name is on the ticket they may choose another ticket if they are present. If they aren’t present, then the bartender will choose another ticket for that person. The payout will be 60/40. You will get 60 % of the pot if you are present or 40% of the pot if you are not present. Any winnings over $600.00 will be subject to a 1099 form, as we have been instructed to do by our accountant.

Tuesday nights we will begin to play bar oriented games - LRC, bar bingo, bar poker and/or maybe another game or 2. We want to see what peaks everyone's interest and go from there. Come on out to have some fun.

We have started up the 300 Club again and spot are filling up quickly. Ask your bartender or a Post Officer if you don't know what it's about.

As always, my number is 561-601-3225.
