ROOD-WILLIAMS POST NO. 271

775 U.S. HIGHWAY 1

TEQUESTA, FLORIDA 33469

VOLUME XVI, NUMBER 11                                            NOVEMBER 2017                                         PUBLISHED MONTHLY

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

Post Members,

Fall is upon us.  I hope all had a happy and healthy summer and we look to welcome back our snowbird members who will be arriving ahead of the cold weather.  I must report that years of neglect, the Post and its infrastructure must be addressed.  Mandated landscaping and a total rebuild of our irrigation system must be done to satisfy the Village of Tequesta and its Code Officers.  We meet monthly with the Special Magistrate and this leaves us in a cash strapped situation.  I urge all members to remit their dues and to donate their time or resources, if available, so we can weather this storm and continue to improve our Post.  We have many events ahead of us before the end of the year.  Tequesta Fest, The Chill Cook Off, Thanksgiving, our 70th Anniversary, Christmas Parade, Christmas and New Years to name a few.  Our website has been improved and our Facebook page will keep you informed of our daily situation.  For those who wish to hear our radio show, please download the application on any smart device (jupradio) and listen in every Thursday and Saturday at 9 a.m.  We are working hard to change the perception and reputation of the American Legion with the public.  We are not a hangout for cheap drinks nor a social clique for a select few.  We support Veterans and Americanism, promote the welfare of all our service members as well as our Police, Firefighters and First Responders.  Come join us and let’s make a change for the better in our community and country.

Respectfully,

Jimmy Josko

Commander

MEMBERSHIP

As of October 21st, we have 342 members who have paid their 2018 dues.  The Department of Florida goal for the month of October is 588 members.  Please be aware that you do not have to wait for a notice from National or the Department to pay your dues.  There is a locked box in the canteen for membership dues.  You can place your dues in an envelope with your name or member number and drop it in this box.  The renewal will be processed promptly.  Please help us reach this goal by paying your membership as soon as possible without creating a hardship on yourself or your family.  (2018 dues is $55.00) If you are not receiving your Legion magazine or your renewal notices, National may not have your correct address.  If you need your address updated or any other issues concerning your membership, please call the Post and leave a number where you can be reached.  I will try to correct the problem.  I thank all of you who have paid your 2018 dues and I look forward to seeing you in the future.

Respectfully,

David Pietrafese

1st Vice Commander

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

PRAYING BUT NOT BELIEVING

You can say prayers in your mind, but doubt in your heart. It is possible to be a “person of prayer” and yet

not have faith.  If you are praying for forgiveness, are you still living in sin?  If you have asked God to provide

for your needs, do you remain worried and anxious? God may choose to respond to your requests despite your

lack of faith, but you will miss the joy of praying in faith.

SAL

Greetings fellow Patriots.  It is with great pride that I make my first contribution towards Post 271’s monthly newsletter.  As the new officers of S.A.L squadron 271 enter our second quarter of annual service, I am excited and encouraged in the participation of our members.  Please spread the word that our meetings are organized and driven to serve the veterans of our community, the post and the members that make this a great organization.  Jim Jacobs did a fantastic job getting our squadron started and we intend to build upon his initiatives and grow as a unit, in the spirit of team work.

Please email me if you want to receive digital updates on our events and meetings at corey1427@yahoo.com.

We in the S.A.L. are proud to contribute to the post towards a new digital calendar, road side marquee sign and represent the post at the Tequesta Fire Fighters annual chili cook off.  Proceeds will benefit four worthy local charities including Honor Flight!  See the bartender for discounted tickets for members of the post.  Normal price is $30, but for $20 you as the member of post 271 can sample over 25 different team’s chili entries and unlimited beer from 2-6 on 11/11/17 (Veterans Day).  Come out and support Sean from the kitchen as he represents the S.A.L. in the 7th annual competition.  And as always, WWII and Korean Vets only need to show up at the event for free entry.

Devoted to mutual helpfulness!

The American Legion Riders (ALR) is a program for members of the American LegionAmerican Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion - collectively “The Legion Family” who share an interest in motorcycling. If you are interested please call, text or email me (561)339-3527  sdnewell4@gmail.com.  If there is enough interest, then we will plan a day for a meet and greet to form ideas on how to get this project started and off the ground.

For the Good of the Post

A Bravo Zulu goes out to Charlie Alsup for the never-ending job of respectfully disposing of the decommissioned U.S. flags that are collected at the Post. From time to time as the flags accumulate they are taken to the Solid Waste Authority and after a decommissioning ceremony they placed in the incinerator for proper disposal. In October, 291 pounds of flags were properly disposed of.

Americanism

My name is Mary Richichi, I teach 8th grade US History at Independence Middle School in Jupiter. As an educator it is important to teach my students about the history of wars our men and women have served in. This past weekend, I was selected to participate in the Korean War Foundation in Orlando. This Foundation is about making the Forgotten War remembered. I had a large portion of my students not know that the was a Korean War and I want to correct that. I am looking for Korean War veterans who would be willing to share their story during their service in the Korean War. Making the veteran feel comfortable is very important as I have conducted interviews before on War veterans. I can video tape, have one on one, have a small group setting, or a class setting. I can even arrange it for it just to be me. Please let me know if you would be interested. You can email me at maryellen.richichi@palmbeachschools.org or you can call/text me at 561 350 0502. Thank you and look forward to hearing from you.
